ANKLE AGONY?
The ankle is a major weight-bearing joint in the body - something we take for granted until it starts to hurt. It is designed to be very tough and stable, but also flexible. Common ankle injuries are sprains (when the ligaments are torn), fractures (when the bones are broken and may also be displaced), and injuries to the great Achilles tendon which runs down the back of the heel. Excessive repetitive trauma to the ankle from high-impact sports can cause bone spurs to develop. Successful treatment may include surgery and/or casting of the joint to ensure immobility while it heals. Rest and evaluation of the ankle are critical to recovery.
Have your ankle problem evaluated by an orthopaedist or a sports medicine physician, and learn as much as you can to keep these important joints in good shape!
